Volkswagen has finally pulled the wraps off the new iteration of the popular Tiguan compact crossover SUV - and it is not looking more mature than ever, according to some folks. Others will say that it's more boring than ever instead.
To each its own, as beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and Volkswagen is known for two things – its traditionalist designs and its worshiping fan base. Anyway, after a rather long wait during which we have seen the Tiguan spied from all angles and rendered on countless occasions, the third generation of the model series that premiered in 2007 is finally live. Ahem, at least in Europe, that is.
As always, the German automaker graces the Old Continent first with the world premiere of the Europe-specification Volkswagen Tiguan. On the other hand, VW faithful are undoubtedly wondering if the popular compact crossover SUV – its current iteration is still on sale from $28,505 – is coming to America. Well, at least we can put to rest the speculation regarding the possibility of seeing the second-generation Tayron coming to the US from China.
That is not going to happen because Volkswagen of America made sure to announce the global reveal of the third-generation Tiguan, which does not directly concern the region. Instead, the US-specific version will be released next year after the long-wheelbase variant of the European Tiguan comes out to play, too. There you go – no Tayron from China, and instead, the Tiguan LWB will cross the big pond (aka the Atlantic Ocean) to the United States.
While that means we still need to wait a while longer before meeting the North American Tiguan, usually, these LWB variants do not differ much in terms of styling and powertrains compared to their SWB siblings. Only the interior space is much better, of course. As such, let's remember some of the regular Tiguan's highlights from the world premiere earlier today.
The new generation is said to arrive (during early 2024) with a "charismatic design and progressive technologies" like the new adaptive chassis control system DCC Pro, an all-new cabin with the "clearly structured" Digital Cockpit, HUD plus "driving experience switch," as well as a new plug-in hybrid model boasting around 62 miles (100 km) of EV range on a charge and DC fast charging capabilities.
As always, the new Tiguan is based on the MQB Evo modular architecture and boasts the new MIB4 infotainment system on up to 15 inches of screen real estate, IQ.Light HD matrix headlights or the newest Park Assist for automated parking. Inside, there are new ergoActive front seats with pneumatic adjustment and massage functions, plus a larger boot to store more items – the luggage space has increased by 37 liters to 652 liters (over 23 cubic feet).
