Less than a week ago Akrapovic released a photo of their all-new upcoming motorcycle exhaust which was supposed to be introduced at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. As promised, Akrapovic revealed their new silencer, together with some PR text which did not convey too much information as to what makes it so different from a technical point of view. As for the shape… they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
During the release event, Igor Akrapovic said that “the idea was to create an overall better - and not just a better-looking - exhaust, while maintaining all the positive qualities of the old exhaust.” To what extent this new creation of the Slovenian company is better than the rest of the existing high-performance units is yet to be learned of, as more technical data is expected into the near future.

Akrapovic has apparently been working on the new generation of exhausts for quite some time now, in complete secrecy, having even ran a “bid” on new designs, which turned out all sorts of solutions, some good and some bad, but Igor’s own idea was chosen in the end as it provided the best compromise of performance and character. He adds that “muffler design has to incorporate volume, ground clearance, performance and sound, all extremely important factors. I wanted to create something completely unique that does not follow any characteristic design approaches of any of the motorcycle producers with which we co-operate.”

The uncanny shape of these exhausts has been reported by Akrapovic as providing the best flow-bench results. The manufacturer adds that these cans have offered the best exhaust gas flow for their cross-section, surpassing the existing designs.

Still…

Well, truth be told, the new Akrapovic slip-on can does indeed look like nothing we’ve seen before, with a very organic hexagonal profile in carbon fiber which looks really alien. Still, as Mr. Akrapovic himself mentioned, these cans don’t seem to borrow any styling cues from existing bikes… but at the same time, they will be rather hard to match with many of these very motorcycles.

Even though to some, these cans are as appealing is it gets, it’s really painful to imagine a cutting edge GSX-R1000 or a BMW R1200GS Adventure fitted with such exhausts. No fitment list was presented, as it looks like this is only a prototype of final products yet to come. The new Akrapovic “alien” exhaust silencers will have to pass “excruciating and rigorous testing before the start of production,” official sources say.

Frankly, I personally say a big “nay” to these, even though I am currently running a pair of Akras on my bike. But these cans just look ugly, and I hope their final design will be better.
