Alpina always gets early access to the newest BMW automobiles, and for over 50 years, they've been creating products with an added layer of exclusivity. Shortly after the launch of a new 3 Series Touring model, they've begun work on a prototype for the B3 or D3 derivative.
This is a household name in the world of custom BMWs, due to a combination of tradition and performance, not forgetting those sexy wheels. But the company's customers are now more into super-sized vehicles like the 7 Series, so it's nice to see something like the B3.
Way back in 1965, the first Alpina car was a small modified 1500. And in the 1970s, the 2002-based racing program came about. While the B3 Touring isn't a race car, it's likely the smallest Alpina car you can take home next year, as the company hasn't touched the 1 Series since the first generation.
The prototype at hand looks like an M340i, but with revisions to the body. It sports a new front bumper, side skirts and quad pipes integrated into the rear diffuser. Also, it's wearing the new dotted grille pattern of the M Performance cars, which we're not big fans of.
So what can we expect in the performance department? Well, with the last model, Alpina took the 340i's 3.0-liter engine and changed literally everything about it to offer us the B3 S with 440 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque. This was coupled to an 8-speed ZF gearbox for a 0 to 100kph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 303 kph (306 for the sedan), yours for about €75,000.
This new B3 Touring might add a bit of power and even AWD, increasing its asking price in the process. We believe that the sports wagon will be ready to be revealed around the time of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, always a popular venue for Burkard Bovensiepen's company.
