At this year’s edition of the Paris Motor Show, Alfa Romeo didn't present the long-due Stelvio SUV. The high-riding model is set to debut at the L.A. Auto Show, which opens its doors to the public on November 18. However, the Italian company didn’t come to Paris empty-handed. Instead of nothing, Alfa Romeo presented two new variants of its ravishing compact executive sedan.
Those variants the Giulia Veloce, which is the Italian word for “fast,” and the Giulia AE. Unfortunately no, those two letters don’t stand for “autoevolution” but for “Advanced Efficiency.” In their domestic market, the Giulia Veloce is priced from €50,500, while the fuel-sipping Giulia AE is priced from €42,500.

In the blue corner, the Giulia Veloce encompasses “the unmistakable charm of Alfa Romeo.” Born in 1956, the Veloce suffix is as evocative as it gets for the Italian manufacturer. Immediately recognizable thanks to the more aggressive front fascia, complete with bi-xenon headlights, the Giulia Veloce comes with Q4 AWD as standard. The profile is visually enriched by bright yellow brake calipers, while the rear is adorned with a pair of chrome-finish exhaust pipes.

The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that lurks under the Giulia Veloce’s hood develops 280 PS (276 HP) at 5,250 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of get-up-and-go at 2,250 rpm, making it the second most powerful Giulia after the twin-turbo V6-engined Quadrifoglio model. As fate would have it, the Giulia Veloce is also available with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine with 210 PS (207 HP) and 470 Nm (346 lb-ft) of torque on tap, peaking at 1,750 rpm. Whatever the engine, the Giulia Veloce comes as standard with an 8-speed automatic.

As for the Giulia AE, this variant is distinguished by a specific badge on the tailgate, and it is better to view it as an optional package. Currently available for the Giulia and Giulia Super trim levels, the Advanced Efficiency model was created with one thing in mind: fewer emissions, less burnt fuel. Hence, the 180 PS (178 HP) 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine is tuned to emit 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer on the combined cycle and drink as little as 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers (67.2 imperial mpg or 90.1 U.S. mpg) combined.
