“This American/European/Asian triple crown will kick off at Silverstone (13th September) in the Le Mans Series. The second round will be the Petit Le Mans (2nd October) in the American Le Mans Series, and the final one will take place on the Asian continent in an Asian Le Mans Series event in November,” announced ACO, via a press release.
The newly-formed series is aimed at giving the major Le Mans 24 hours players, namely Audi and Peugeot, the chance to run their LMP1 prototypes throughout the year and come to the mid-June event more prepared. The creation of this series was today praised by German manufacturer Audi, who already announced it will field two R15 TDIs in the 2010 season.
The French organizers confirmed that the 2010 Le Mans International Cup is only the first step towards creating a wider and more complex series in 2011. That series is scheduled to feature at least 6 races (including the aforementioned three), with further details to be announced by the spring of 2010.
“A teams’/manufacturers’ classification for the “2010 Le Mans Intercontinental Cup” will be established on the basis of the overall results of these races. The “2010 Le Mans Intercontinental Cup” prefigures the creation of a world trophy for the 2011 season, which will be run in compliance with the new ACO regulations: it will consist of 6 races minimum,” added the press release from the ACO.
