AC System Bolt is the Culprit of a Safety Recall Affecting 106,000 Acura MDX Vehicles

With a tagline that goes like “Inspired by the standards of mankind,” the safety recall affecting the Acura MDX mid-size luxury crossover is like a jigsaw falling into place. The Honda-owned car brand announced that 106,349 units of the MDX are affected over a sub-standard AC system bolt.
According to American Honda Motor Co., certain 2014 to 2015 model year Acura MDX and MDX AWD vehicles are affected, namely the ones manufactured from April 23rd, 2013, to December 16th, 2014. The issue lies with the air conditioning compressor clutch drive bolts because they “may not have received the proper anti-corrosion coating.”

Gee, some of us thought that manufacturers test even the smallest nuts and bolts for years before giving the OK to use those parts during the development of a new model. The absurdity of this imprudence goes to such lengths that Acura describes the consequence as “If a bolt was not coated, it may corrode and break as a result.” Wait, what? Wasn’t it the use of an improper coating? Now some bolts may not be coated at all?

Still, the AC system bolts in the affected population of cars may break as a consequence of premature corrosion. If it breaks, the missing bolt will permit the compressor clutch plate to separate from the vehicle. As a result of that, it’s fair to say nobody would want to run over or be hit by a chunky bit of metal.

As a solution to this problem, Acura promises to replace the air conditioner clutch drive bolt at no charge to the customer. Affected customers are advised to contact Acura of North America at 1-800-382-2238.
