BMW dropped turbo diesel vehicles from its North American lineup after MY18 due to poor demand for this big-rig engine technology. Even in the Old Continent, diesel is on its way out due to regulations and rising demand for hybrids and EVs.
Be that as it may, there are quite a few good turbo diesel-engined BMWs out there on the road. Most peeps appreciate their fuel economy on the highway, including a certain Douglas from California. Despite owning a few go-faster machines, he dailies a 2010 BMW 335d with 380 horsepower and a whopping 600 pound-feet (813 Nm) at the rear wheels.

Good for 40 to 45 miles per gallon (5.9 to 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers) on the long haul, the unassuming E90 featured in the video below makes this kind of power and torque due to a compound turbo setup and methanol injection. Douglas further improved the inline-six turbo diesel by deleting the EGR and DEF, thus allowing the sixer to breathe out better.

Pictured on Apex wheels and Bridgestone Potenza rubber boots, the Bavarian sleeper also sports M3-style carbon mirror caps and a carbon spoiler. Equipped with the bone-stock ZF 6HP six-speed auto, the Bimmer is relatively stock inside as well. At first glance, only the red start button and carbon trim are aftermarket. However, the glove box hides a dirty secret in the form of a meth injection controller.

Tipping the scales at circa 3,800 pounds (1,724 kilograms), the E90 has to prove itself against a tuned sports coupe with 700 horses or thereabouts at the crankshaft. More specifically, a red-painted 2013 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe with the LSA small block.

The 6.2-liter mill boasts a Stage 2 camshaft, an upgraded air intake, coolant pump, heat exchanger, a tune, and an upper pulley for good measure. Rolling on Nitto NT555 G2 305/35R20 performance tires wrapped around 11-inch-wide wheels, the Caddy also features a mostly stock interior. But as opposed to the E90, the CTS-V Coupe is rocking an HP Tuners tuner/datalogger right next to the driver's A pillar.

Also equipped with a torque-converter automatic in the guise of the GM Hydra-Matic 6L90, the rear-drive coupe weighs in the ballpark of 4,400 pounds (1,996 kilograms). Despite being heavier than the E90, there's no denying the CTS-V Coupe has the upper hand in a drag race. That's exactly what happened over two of three 1,000-foot digs, with the E90 asserting dominance in the final race only. With Gary King Jr. from Hoonigan in the passenger seat of the CTS-V Coupe, that is, and Douglas getting the hit.

Be that as it may, it's quite surprising to see the daily-driven turbo diesel E90 cross the finish line a hood's length after that no-nonsense Cadillac. Although the CTS-V Coupe is no more, General Motors still makes a CTS-V-like performance sedan, that sedan being the CT5-V Blackwing. It's quite a bit pricier than the CTS-V before it, though, with Cadillac asking $93,495 before the destination fee and extras.

Over at BMW, the closest thing to the CT5-V Blackwing is the M5 sedan. To be redesigned in 2024 as a 2025 model, the M5 is going plug-in hybrid with 700-plus horsepower on deck. Oh, and by the way, the M5 Touring is also returning to the M lineup.
