More than 550,000 Pontiac G6 vehicles from the 2005 and 2006 model years are the subject of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation over brake lights issues, the agency revealed earlier this week.
According to The Detroit News, the NHTSA has been investigating the problem since February, after receiving hundreds of complaints from customers, who were reporting that the brake lights may malfunction. The recall affects 551,511 examples, about 81 percent of the entire production.
“The brake lights may activate without depressing the brake pedal and/or turn off when the brake pedal is depressed,” the reports says, adding that the NHTSA has upgraded its probation into an engineering analysis. The agency could ask the automaker to recall the concerned G6 models if the investigation finds the vehicles to be unsafe.
The Pontiac G6 was built from 2004 through 2009 and shared its platform with the Chevrolet Malibu and the Saab 9-3, among other GM vehicles. 676,085 units of the mid-size sedan were sold before GM pulled the plug on the G6. The Pontiac bran was declared defunct in 2010, after 84 years of automotive activity.
