The Isle of Mann is a heaven for both car and bike enthusiasts looking for speed and a challenging road. It is only natural that such a special place would spawn the occasional record-breaking machine - in this case a modified 500cc motorbike.
A team of motorcycle enthusiasts, the Lonan Gentlemen’s Fellowship, managed to break the 500cc speed record, which had been standing for, wait for it, 39 years! Their average speed for both timed runs was 188.73 mph or 301.96 km/h, which surpassed the old record by 12 mph (19.2 km/h) - on one of the runs, the bike nudged 191 mph (305.6 km/h).

The run was carried out on a specially modified Suzuki Hayabusa with a special 500 cc engine - the driving force behind the attempt, literally! According to Richard Barks, the rider, "It's been tremendous really and a bit like a dream. The whole team has pulled together to make this happen [. . .] To reach 191mph on the second run out here is tremendous. It's a bit like racing on a beach with a set of racing slicks on. It has been an incredible experience.
