5 Millionth Car Produced in Fiat's SATA Plant

Fiat Group’s SATA plant in San Nicola di Melfi (Potenza, Italy) celebrated on Monday the production of its 5 millionth vehicle. The vehicle is a red five-door Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 Emotion, 105 horsepower, a model which evolved from the Grande Punto.

To celebrate this production milestone, the industrial site was decorated with a series of posters on a variety of topics inspired by the components of each of the 5,000,000 vehicles produced, in praise of all of the plant's employees.

The event was celebrated at the plant with a ceremony attended by the Governor of the Basilicata region, Vito De Filippo, the President of the Province of Potenza, Piero Lacorazza, the President of the Confindustria Basilicata Pasquale Carrano, the Bishop of the Diocese of Melfi-Rapolla-Venosa, Mgr. Gianfranco Todisco and the Director of the SATA plant, Nicola Intrevado.

The SATA plant (Societa Automobilistica Tecnologie Avanzate - Advanced Automotive Technology Plant) produces today the Punto Evo, the Grande Punto and the Punto Classic models. Established in September 1993, the plant’s first product was the first generation of the Fiat Punto, produced until 1999.

Fiat’s plant also produced some 870,000 units of the Lancia Ypsilon, a model which contributed significantly to the total amount of 5 million vehicles built.

On 18 June 2009, the Melfi plant was the first Italian factory to be awarded Silver Level certification by WCM (World Class Manufacturing), an international standard for production cycle organisation. There are three intermediate stages (Bronze, Silver and Gold), before a candidate can finally reach World Class Level. After receiving Bronze certification in April 2007, last year SATA received its Silver Level from the esteemed WCM Auditing Body, presided by Prof. Hajime Yamashina.
