48 gallons is a lot of fuel. Over the big blue pond known as the Atlantic Ocean, that’ll be 181.7 liters. A more international indicator of the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty’s optional tank is the equivalent of 550 Coca-Cola cans. Pretty impressive stuff.
Even though the F-250 through the F-450 are thirsty and huge pickup trucks in size and gross vehicle weight rating, the 48-gallon tank is sure to last more than the driver’s bladder on the long haul. Still, the humongous fuel tank is currently available only for the long-bed Crew Cab configuration.
Available for both the 6.2-liter gasoline-fed V8 and 6.7-liter turbo diesel, the range-extending reservoir is 22 percent larger than the 37.5-gallon (141.9-liter) tank in the diesel-powered 2016 Super Duty. More impressive still, it’s 37 percent larger than the gasoline-powered 2016 Super Duty’s 35-gallon (132.4 -liter) tank. In the heavy-duty truck wars, Ford has another ace up its sleeve.
Other than the optional fuel tank, the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty with the Power Stroke turbo diesel boasts a larger exhaust fluid tank. It’s up 2.5 gallons from the model year 2016. In addition to the 7.5-gallon (28.4-liter) diesel exhaust fluid reservoir, the diesel-powered Super Duty trucks also pride themselves on a better design for the fuel filter and water separator filter.
According to the Ford Motor Company, the improvements allow for longer change intervals, which equals less time and money spent on maintenance, allowing Super Duty owners more time on the road. And to be frank, that’s what most heavy-duty pickup truck owners want – getting the job done.
“We want to give our customers a more productive tool for getting the most out of their trucks,” declared Brian Rathsburg, marketing manager for the Ford F-Series Super Duty. “This means less downtime at the fuel pump and performing routine maintenance, and more time on the job,” he added.
