2.5 Million Quid for a McLaren F1

Some things do get better with age, like red wine, men and exotic cars. McLarens have never been known as “people's cars”, it never broke any record for sales numbers, but the one record it did break, was to be the first car to cost 1 million dollars.

If you think that's pricy, think again. These days, you'd be lucky to get an F1 for that kind of money. Like most other things made in few numbers and destined for rich people, the McLaren's only get pricier with the passing of time.

RM Auctions knew that and held a public sale for one of the McLaren's F1 during it's “Automobiles of London” show in Battersea Park. The car had the chassis number 65 and was presented as the centerpiece of the evening, being the last one to be sold. It was actually the last road car ever to be produced under the F1 logo in 1997.

This particular model sat for years in the company's Park Lane showroom for which reason, it's probably one of the most famous of the F1 models. That's why this car had only done 484 km in its entire life, ever since it left the factory door.

Up to the moment of the sale, the car had only had one previous owner and he took very good care of it, even sending out a mechanic to Asia to give it its 12 months service.

The price for all that exclusivity and class? 2.5 million quid after the auction. It's said that the car went to a Houston based collector who is surely envied by many other people with enough dosh to buy it but who just didn't get the chance.
