The 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, or Auto China 2024, to be held between April 25 and May 4 at the New China International Exhibition Centre, will gather some mighty fine introductions.
A lot of global automakers will strive to capture the imagination of Chinese customers with their latest releases, and Mercedes-Benz is committed to fighting everyone to ascertain domination. Naturally, that also means gracing the show with major premieres – and it has two of them in addition to smaller ones: the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology and the new performance flagship Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance.
Obviously, both of them cater to different types of customers and use-case scenarios. For example, while it retains the styling that has made it famous since the late 1970s, the electric G-Class is now a state-of-the-art EV with four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels integrated into the ladder frame and churning out a combined 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque. Its tricks also include the 'tank turn' (called G-Turn, of course) along with a 116-kWh battery pack integrated into the tough chassis, and for the 2025 model year, it will arrive in places like America with Edition One goodies.
At the other end of the spectrum, quite literally, sits an ICE-powered two-door sports car, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and 805 combined ponies. It has active roll stabilization, fully variable all-wheel drive, active rear-axle steering, and carbon ceramic high-performance brakes, all standard. But even more importantly, it has the quickest acceleration of any series-production Mercedes and AMG: zero to 60 mph (96 kph) in 2.7 seconds.
It's equipped with the 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine just like any other logical AMG ('seriously, the four-bangers are not AMGs,' will say much of the fan community) but also has an AMG Electric Drive Unit for a combined system torque of up to 1,047 lb-ft that not only allows the brisk acceleration pace but also helps with the 199-mph (320 kph) top speed. Alas, some folks might not be satisfied with the GT being too easily confounded between models by the non-connoisseur.
For example, the second-generation AMG GT (C192) now has three V8 tunes – 469-hp GT 55, 577-hp GT 63, and the fresh 805-hp GT 63 S E Performance, but folks who are not exactly the biggest car enthusiasts might mistake it for the meager GT 43, which uses a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo mild hybrid assembly and only churns out 375 horsepower. No worries, though, as the imaginative realm of digital car content creators is always ready to come to the rescue.
As such, the virtual automotive artist tucked behind the j.b.cars social media label has another cool CGI idea that will help with the aforementioned conundrum - he envisions the GT 63 S E Performance as a member of the Mercedes Gullwing family alongside models like the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL grand tourer or the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. So, what do you think? Could this work as a way to differentiate solely the flagship GT 63 S E Performance from the rest of the GTs?
