Everyone and their dog expected the WRX to receive something new for 2024. But nobody could have guessed that Subaru would revive the TR moniker last used by the 2007 model year Impreza WRX TR.
First and foremost, TR stands for Tuner Ready, referring to a bare-bones car meant for customizing the second it's driven off the dealer lot. Regarding the Hawkeye Impreza WRX TR from 2006 and 2007, that one is best described as a spartan sports sedan.

Six-disc stereo? Nope. Leather on the steering wheel? A whole lotta nope again. The original tuner-ready specification came with unpainted mirror caps, the most basic of seats, no fog lights, no side skirts, and no spoiler. What's more, it also lacked automatic climate control (in favor of a basic air-con system).

Amenities further included power mirrors and windows, along with cruise control. Originally priced at $23,995 (plus $625 for the destination freight charge), the Impreza WRX TR packs 230 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 235 pound-feet (317 Nm) of twist at 3,600 rpm from a 2.5-liter turbo four-pot boxer.

Subaru did get it wrong, though. Being a tuner-ready spec, the Impreza WRX TR should have sported steelies instead of 17-inch aluminum wheels finished in oh-so-boring silver. After all, said wheels would be automatically replaced with a set of aftermarket wheels (and stickier tires).

Speaking of wheels, the 2024 Subaru WRX TR dons a different wheel design from the 2023 Subaru WRX. A set of red brake calipers that read Brembo in white paint also needs to be mentioned. Other than that, it's up to your imagination what the TR has in store.

According to Subaru, the enthusiast-focused WRX TR is sharper. Than what? Once again, we don't know because sharp could either indicate better looks or better handling. Or both? Due to debut at Subiefest Florida on October 7, the WRX TR will be revealed with the help of Travis Pastrana and Bucky Lasek.

If the 2024 model year Subaru BRZ tS is anything to go by, then look forward to STI-tuned suspension, a few unique design elements both outside and for the interior, as well as EyeSight Driver Assist Technology in combination with a manual box.

Although the BRZ tS sports the very same peak horsepower and torque ratings as lesser trims of the BRZ, it does level up to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires of the Limited. The STI-tuned suspension refers to Hitachi dampers that promise more stability in the twisties.

The BRZ tS comes with a six-speed manual exclusively, whereas lesser grades can be optioned with a torque-converter auto. In the WRX's case, that would be a chain-type continuously variable transmission with a pompous name: Subaru Performance Transmission. Said tranny offers eight-speed manual shifting mode, which is kind of curious given its design. Truth be told, it's kind of pointless in a WRX in the same way a torque-converter auto doesn't make sense in a lightweight sports coupe like the BRZ.
