I've just rewatched The Fifth Element for the 20th time. Or it's more than that. I like to revisit movies that make me feel a certain way. I've done with all my favorite series, including The Fast and The Furious. But I have yet to see the new Gran Turismo movie.
I had fun playing Gran Turismo 7 over the past 12 months. While it has been on hold for some time now, I plan on taking on new challenges within the game soon. As for the Gran Turismo movie, it has pretty decent reviews. But what works for you might lead to a different result in my case. One of my hardcore motorsport enthusiast friends saw the flick, and he was disappointed in it.

Then again, this guy has been inches away from hundreds of race cars for the better part of the last decade. So he's not easily impressed. I'll share my honest review of the movie once I get to it. But until then, let's see if the new Hot Wheels Gran Turismo set for 2024 is any good. I recall at least two sets with the same theme in recent years.

Each one included eight vehicles, which was great. The red Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) was the best collectible in the first set, while the McLaren F1 GTR stole the show with the second mix. It's rather strange to see Mattel reverting to a five-car set for 2024, but this will have to do for now.

The '73 BMW 3.0 CSL Race Car is the only Fraser Campbell-designed casting here. It has been around since 2016, and we have seen 12 variations from the team in El Segundo. That includes a Toy Fair iteration, one Super Treasure Hunt, and two Premium models. The latest appearance was in the Ultra Hots Mix 1 for 2024, featuring a spectacular Spectraflame Black finish.

The simple orange paint job is not quite at the same level, but the Porsche-inspired Cast 5-Spoke wheels significantly improve the looks of the latest variation. We should be happy that the Gran Turismo stickers don't stick out too much and work well with the tinted windows. I bet that the Bimmer will be the second most-coveted model of the set.

2017 Nissan GT-R (R35)

The '17 Nissan GT-R (R35) is the first of two Ryu Asada-designed castings that are part of the new Gran Turismo set. It's a casting I'm fond of, and I still have the First Edition iteration in my collection. Someone is trying to get $875 for the Tanner Fox edition GT-R, and it seems strange that he has slowed down his channel a lot in the past year.

You could pay as much as $200 for the 2020 STH variation, but the Gran Turismo iteration will be that expensive. It's the only item in the new mix to feature Star 5-spoke wheels, but I still think it will take a true GT-R enthusiast to be willing to pick this collectible up. It ranks just as poorly in my books as the last car on the list, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a car that will probably have people fighting over it as soon as it arrives in stores. Hot Wheels Porsches tend to cause a stir, and I'll buy one for my German "party in the rear" collection. Dmitriy Shakhmatov designed this casting, and Mattel has released 15 variations since 2016.

The 2019 Super Treasure Hunt iteration was off the hook in Spectraflame Purple, and this car also featured a Tanner Fox edition. The new Gran Turismo release reminds me of the 2021 Factory 500 HP model but with added decals. Am I the only one who thinks this is the best Gran Turismo model here?

'20 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The latest iteration of Lindsey Lee's '20 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 features the same Modern Muscle 5-Spoke wheels as the Porsche. It looks similar to the First Edition model but features theme-relevant decals that make the livery look cluttered.

You're looking at the eight iterations of the Shelby GT500, and it's interesting to see that all of the items on the list thus far have had one Super Treasure Hunt appearance. That's not going to be valid for the following vehicle, though.

'20 Toyota GR Supra

I'm not impressed with the new '20 Toyota GR Supra design. I get it; this car wouldn't exist without Gazoo Racing, but still! It's the ninth variation of Ryu Asada's design, but neither has been particularly exciting yet. With so many pro drivers using this chassis in competitions worldwide, you'd think Mattel would have found some exciting liveries by now.

Can you imagine how good this would be in the same HKS livery we've seen on certain GT-Rs? If you have yet to see the new set in a store near you, you can always look for it on online markets. Some sellers in Malaysia have already listed some offers, albeit pricey ones.
