Originally slated to enter series production on October 30, the 2024 model year GMC Canyon will – hopefully – start rolling off the assembly line on January 2. In addition to the UAW strikes and General Motors closing all North American plants during the week of December 25, the Detroit-based automaker is understood to be facing a parts shortage that directly affects the GMC Canyon's production.
Be that as it may, the build & price tool has been updated with the 2024 model. What is especially curious about said online configurator is that GMC refers prospective customers to the dealers for the retail price of the AT4X AEV Edition off-road package. Exclusive to the AT4X off-road spec, which is listed with an MSRP of $55,895 including destination charge, the AT4X AEV Edition comprises go-anywhere goodies supplied by American Expedition Vehicles.
Before going any further, it should be mentioned that Chevrolet offers a similar off-road trim level and package in the form of the Colorado ZR2 Bison. As opposed to GMC, the Chevrolet brand's configurator lists the Bison package with a retail price of $11,700. This package cannot be selected without Chevy throwing in the Safety Package ($445) on top of it.
Including the Colorado's $1,595 destination freight charge, the ZR2 Bison is advertised with a final price of $60,540 at the very least. With the AT4X being a staggering $7,500 more expensive than the ZR2, the AT4X AEV Edition is probably priced at $68,040.
Excuse my French, but how did mid-size pickup trucks get so close to $70,000? It's too much in every respect, especially when you realize that's the kind of money that would otherwise buy you a nicely equipped truck from the half-ton segment. For example, the Sierra 1500 Elevation with the 3.0-liter Duramax and 4WD starts at $58,485.

The AEV Edition package's contents are pretty similar to those in the ZR2 Bison. It kicks off with stamped-steel front and rear bumpers, a plethora of skid plates to protect the overly pricey truck's oily bits from boulders on the trail, LT315/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Territory rubber, beadlock-capable wheels with AEV center caps, some wheel flares, as well as an in-bed vertical spare tire mount.
The list continues with a full-size spare, an all-weather floor liner, a power distribution box, a switch plate, AEV logos for the front headrests, AEV badging, and gloss black for the door handles. Lower down the spectrum, the luxury-oriented Denali starts at $52,595 and flaunts four-wheel drive as standard.
4WD is also standard in the AT4's case, which is $44,595 from the outset. As for the Elevation, make that $37,595 with rear-wheel drive and $40,895 with four-wheel drive. As opposed to the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, the Canyon rocks the high-output turbo across the board. General Motors calls it TurboMax, and the maximum output numbers come in the form of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet (583 Nm).
Not bad at all for a mid-size pickup, although there are punchier alternatives in the segment. The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor comes to mind with its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 as opposed to the 2.7-liter turbo I4 of the Canyon and Colorado. The Raptor starts at $55,470 and features 33-inch tires from BFGoodrich rather than 35s for the ZR2 Bison and AT4X AEV Edition.
