Porsche has a major anniversary milestone this year, and as the name of this new special series readily suggests, it's all about celebrating 25 years since the original Boxster came to life. The roadster family, of course, is getting a collector’s limited edition called the Boxster 25 Years.
To ensure proper exclusivity, the Boxster 25 Years will be limited to a mere 1,250 units; all will be globally sold and are derived from the GTS 4.0 version, equipped with the company’s 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine churning out 394 hp ( 400 PS).

The company is making a double call back, though – both towards the original 1996 Boxster and the 1993 Boxster concept car that put everything in place for the future success story of the open-top two-seater. This is why the brand is releasing the first details about the Boxster 25 Years in January, as the prototype made its debut at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show.

This year’s North American International Auto Show has been canceled altogether – just like it happened in 2020, amid continued health concerns. So, Porsche didn’t have the classic Detroit venue to showcase the Boxster 25 Years properly, but that’s the (virtual) world we live in right now.

As far as the original Boxster (986) is concerned, the model went into production in late 1996 after very few changes were made to the 1993 concept car and hasn’t had any hiccups since then, merrily travelling the world across four generations and racking up more than 357k sales in the process.

The first direct callback to be noticed on the Boxster 25 Years is the remastered Neodyme accent color, “a copper-like shimmering brown,” which again provides a fitting contrast to the body’s GT Silver Metallic hue. The detailing is present on the front apron, side intakes, and – most obviously – on the dual-tone 20-inch alloy wheels.

If anyone doesn’t like this combination, Porsche is also offering the Boxster 25 Years dressed up in Deep Black Metallic and Carrara White Metallic. Moving inside, the new special edition features more nods to the past, including a match between the Bordeaux leather interior and the red fabric convertible top (with Boxster 25 lettering). The other option is to have everything black, in case the crimson shades are too much for you.

Underneath the metal resides the 4.0-liter powertrain from the 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS, combining the flat-six with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch (PDK) box. Top speed is said to be 293 kph (almost 183 mph), while the quickest sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) - in exactly four seconds - is attained when selecting the PDK option.

The Porsche Boxster 25 years special edition is readily available to order and will reach dealerships starting March, with pricing kicking off from €94,986 (around $115,909 at the current exchange rates) at home in Germany.
