Mercedes is a very serious car company, the biggest name in the luxury business. If you want a cute car, go talk to Renault or some other French carmaker. Except, the all-new GLA-Class is way rounder than the previous generation.
Other than smart cars, the only other Daimler vehicle that could have been called cute is the first-gen A-Class, the city dweller. The GLA II kind of reminds us of that, though its proportions probably have more to do with the segment it now has to occupy.

When the GLA came out, it was the first Mercedes crossover, a rival for the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, which were very car-like as well. But now, the GLB-Class has arrived, practical and rugged, allowing its older brother to do some cardio and lose weight.

Looking at the prototype, captured on the streets of Stuttgart by WalkoArt, we notice its baby-like round cheeks, big eyes and smooth bottom. We remember driving the original GLA and noticing the angry creases on its hood, but there's none of that here.

Of course, the new Mercedes design language is partly to blame. It's all about smooth lines like a pebble washed up by the sea. The GLA II's proportions appear quite close to those of the A-Class hatchback - wheelbase, tracks, and overall length are likely almost the same size, though a couple of inches may have been added to the height.

Engine-wise, you can expect even more changes over the previous model. Most versions will use either 2-liter diesel units with 150 or 190 HP matched to 8-speed gearboxes, or the Renault 1.3-liter turbo, of which plug-in hybrid versions are planned.

But just because it's small and cute doesn't mean the GLA won't get the full AMG treatment. We've spotted the GLA 35, which will rival the VW T-Roc R, as well as the 421 horsepower GLA 45 S.
