Showcased at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show as the Concept X7 iPerformance, what eventually became the X7 started a bit of a controversy among BMW enthusiasts and beyond. Not only does the U.S.-made SUV mark the automaker’s first effort in the full-size utility vehicle segment but the ginormous grille puts off plenty of people.
Visuals aside, the X7 didn’t follow in the footsteps of the X6, X5, X4, and X3 will full-on M versions. The most potent specification is the M50i with the N63 twin-turbo V8, but Alpina knows a thing or two about making BMWs better. The all-new XB7, for example, serves as a sort of preview for the X7 M that may or may not happen next year.
Priced at $141,300 plus $995 for the destination charge, the M50i-based luxobarge levels up to 612 horsepower (620 PS) and 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) of torque. To put those figures into perspective, the X6 M Competition features 617 horsepower (625 PS) and 553 pound-feet (750 Nm) of torque from the S63 twin-turbo V8. As the headline implies, this fellow here is close enough to the yet-to-be-confirmed X7 M Competition.
Alpina says its admiral ship needs four seconds flat to accelerate from a standstill to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), an impressive feat for a vehicle that tips the scales at 5,860 pounds and features a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds (2,658 and 3,402 kilograms). Speaking of truck-related things, the mid-size Ford Ranger also tows up to 7,500 pounds.
The top speed is also impressive at 180 mph (290 km/h) with the 21-inch tire/rim combo, exactly the same velocity as the X6 M Competition with the M Driver’s Package. Customers can specify 23-inch rubber as well, measuring 285/35 and 325/35, respectively.
There’s no denying the performance is fit for the Alpina brand but do take a look through the photo gallery. Alpina traits are present on the outside and inside as well, and the laser-etched iDrive Controller definitely contributes to the exclusiveness of this gentle giant.
