The Internet is keeping a close eye on the 2020 Toyota Supra these days, watching every move owners and aftermarket developers are making. And here's where we are at the moment: the Mk V that brought us here recently hit over 600 horsepower on the dyno, with this making for a world record.
To be more precise, this 2020 Supra delivered 527 horsepower and 462 lb-ft at the rear wheels and if we use the good old 15 percent drivetrain loss (it's an automatic, after all), we end up with a crank muscle figure of 620 hp.
Now, as you'll be able to notice in the comments section of the Instagram post at the bottom of the page, the world wide web hasn't changed too much, so you can still put on your "haters gonna hate" t-shirt while browsing.
As such, there are plenty of negative comments, but all those behind them need to understand a few aspects. Sure, the B58 3.0-liter straight-six of the Supra has already been taken past 800 hp (last time I checked) by BMW tuners. But this is a world record for the Supra, which has only been with its owners for about a month, even though certain aftermarket companies did get their hands on it a bit earlier in the year (here's Japanese drifting champ Daigo Saito's 2JZ build, for instance).
In fact, the record we have here might not even make it to September, so there's no point in downplaying the whole thing - it is what it is, namely a won battle in the war to take the new Supra to four-digit land. For the sake of comparison, I'll remind you that the factory output of the Supra sits at 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, even though dyno runs have proven those numbers to be understated.
And while bringing the C8 Corvette into the discussion can change everything, this is true for pretty much any performance car on sale today, so let's wait for the mid-engined 'Vette to arrive in the real world before going down this path.
For the record, this Toyota obviously went past the downpipes+tune stage, as it also features a Pure Turbos unit, for instance.
So check out the dyno run of the Japanese toy below and see you at the next build!
