It's only been a couple of months since the debut of the all-new Audi A1, and already the engine range is full. We've already looked at the base 30 TFSI which has a 1-liter turbo, but if you want to be a man, get the 40 TFSI like the one in this video.
Yes, the engine that was announced during the launch is already available. The name says nothing, so you can just call it the 2.0 TFSI since there are no other 2-liter models. This setup is identical to that of the Polo GTI with which the A1 shares its platform. We also believe there's a Cupra Ibiza on its way, but this has not yet been confirmed for production.
Regardless, the 40 TFSI is quite different from all the other A1 models. As standard, it comes with S line, which is a body kit and trim level combo. Also, the S tronic gearbox is a 6-speed wet-clutch DSG unlike the ones fitted to the 1.0 and 1.5. Oops, we're not supposed to call it a DSG, even though that's what it is.
200 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque poor from that 2-liter turbo onto the front wheels. This results in a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds, both officially and in this independent test. Top speed is rated at 235 km/h, and all that means a headache for early Golf GTIs.
The shocking downside to having this configuration is the price: €29,100. Not only is that more than the Polo GTI with the same engine and gearbox, but just about matches the Hyundai i30 N. And while the Koreans give you everything for free, Audi asks up to €2,250 for a set of 18-inch wheels.
The virtual cockpit isn't standard, but it's cheap at €150 while navigation can set you back ten times that. Still, expensive but boldly designed Audis usually do well, and the chances of another S1 model going into production are pretty low, so this is as good as the A1 gets.
