At the present moment, the most spacious full-size SUV you can buy in the United States of America is a Ford. The model in question is the Expedition in EL form, which happens to be nearing the end of the line. As soon as the 2017 Detroit Auto Show in January, the fourth-gen Expedition will be born into this world.
Just like the Expedition before it, the one with up to 168 cubic feet (4,757 liters) of cargo capacity, the new one looks as big as they come. Based on the backbone of the F-Series, the 2018 Ford Expedition will be a true body-on-frame SUV, but with a twist. That twist is, as expected, the tough military-grade aluminum alloy body panels from the light-duty F-Series family.
The 2018 Lincoln Navigator will also go down aluminum road. Previewed by a gullwing door-equipped concept with styling cues inspired by the 2017 Lincoln Continental luxury sedan, the next-generation Navigator is also expected to go on sale late next year. But that is that and this is now, so what else is in store for those interested in the soon-to-debut 2018 Expedition?
In the design department, the raked windshield, oversized rear windows, and strong belt line are the name of the game. While the rear end is heavily camouflaged, the front end of the 2018 Ford Expedition reveals smaller grille and headlights than what the F-150 has to offer. Speaking of the F-150, the oily bits, from engines to transmissions, are shared with the Ford Expedition.
At first, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and, if Ford can make a case for it, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 will be available. As for the duty of swapping cogs, a 10-speed automatic transmission that was jointly developed with General Motors will do the trick. Curiously enough, our spy photographers suggest that “by 2019, the Expedition is slated to have a 3.5L-based hybrid powertrain.”
These being said, we’re expecting the all-new Expedition to make its world debut early next year at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. Production, we hear, is expected to start in July 2017 at the Louisville, Kentucky plant.
