The current BMW Z4 isn't exactly the most beautiful roadster ever made, but we get the feeling its replacement won't give the Jaguar F-Type a run for its money either.
These are the first spy photos of the all-new Z5 testing at the Nurburgring. The car only did one lap of the track, but it was enough for our skilled photographers to snap the first interior shots.
Not surprisingly, it's got an iDrive tablet on top of the dash, and a digital dashboard in front of the driver. The rev counter has got yellow and white dials, while the red line is somewhere below 7,000 rpm, suggesting a turbocharged engine is under the hood.
Of course, we knew that already. The Z5 will be offered exclusively with B-series 2- and 3-liter engines, simples ones that are already available. So don't get your hopes up, because there isn't going to be another M roadster.
What we're most surprised of is how dull the dash looks. The current BMW roadster has this funky colored trim and air vents that you don't see on other models. Audi's TT also has a special dash, and so does the SLC... in a way. You don't even see that driver-centric nonsense, where they angle all the screens and buttons towards the man at the wheel.
We've seen photos of the all-new Toyota Supra, the sister car to the Z5, and it looks about the same. The sat-nav, air vents, and al the major buttons are in the same place. See, that's why you should never make two of the same thing at once. It's why Clarkson says the Fiata is a failure and why one twin is slightly less academically inclined than his brother.
Thankfully, the family resemblance will be far less noticeable outside, as BMW's butch kidney grilles and Bavarian design cover everything.
