Around 24 hours ago, we brought you a set of 2017 BMW 5 Series Touring spy pics, with the less camouflaged pre-production vehicle in the images allowing us to see the styling of the upcoming wagon. Well, the time has come for the 2017 5 Series sedan to drop quite a lot of its psychedelic wrap and show its overly conservative lines.
By that, we mean that the styling of the G30-codenamed Bimmer follows the expected evolutionary pathway. In fact, we wouldn't be entirely surprised if people would mistake the outgoing F10 for a G30 or vice-versa.

Sure, the camo isn't completely gone, but a bit of focus is all that's required to figure out how the new 5er will look once it makes its debut.

While the technical aficionados would distinguish the two prototypes spied here based on the different tailpipes these sport, their contrasting hues allow us to achieve the purpose mentioned in the paragraph above.

And while German automakers have accustomed us to such a visually-connected generation gap, the BMW's styling changes appear to be smaller than in the case of its competitors. Some may claim that the recently-introduced W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has an excuse for distancing itself form the styling of its predecessor, since the company design language had evolved over the long life cycle of the E.

Well, the current C7 Audi A6 did the same when it showed up half a decade ago, marking a serious skin refresh compared to its C6 predecessor.

Returning to the 2017 BMW 5 Series, the Bavarians are expected to introduce the model at next month's Paris Motor Show. And the looser camo on these test cars seems to confirm this.

Regardless of whether the 5er's appearance floats your boat or not, there are plenty of tech reasons to be excited for. For starters, the CLAR architecture underpinning the seventh incarnation of the model, which we've already met on the 2016 7 Series, is expected to bring a diet of around 220 lbs (100 kg).

And while those aiming for high MPGs in a hybrid or diesel will be thrilled to see the reduced mass benefiting efficiency, fans that find themselves at the other end of the scale will find out what the 600+ hp of the F90 M5 can do when treated with a lighter burden and aided by all-wheel-drive.

New technology? Of course, the 2017 BMW 5-Series won't let the new E-Class get away easily on this front. In fact, BMW has already previewed a feature that will debut on the G30 Sedan and G31 Touring, namely the Remote View 3D, which allows the driver to check the surroundings of the vehicle on his or her smartphone. So you'll get to see even more of the car's exterior while being inside it.
