What do the 2018 BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG GT R have in common? Well, for one thing, these German monsters shared a Nurburgring industry session this week and yes, they did end up chasing each other.
BMW may have released the F90 incarnation of the M5, but the test car continues to lap the Nurburgring and it seems that the Germans didn't bother to take off the camo - in case you need to refresh your memory, you'll find the official pics of the sprinting sedan here.

As for why the GT R was present on the Green Hell, this could have something to do with the even more hardcore version of the Mercedes-AMG GT the company is currently testing on the infamous German circuit.

Some expect the Affalterbach monster to become a road-going version of the GT4 racecar, while others claim this is the first mule for the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. One way or another, we'll get an incredibly sharp V8 supercar packing track-savvy details such as a polymer rear window.

Returning to the M5, we're expecting the 600 hp Bavarian monster to be aiming for the Nurburgring production sedan lap record. With the all-new all-wheel-drive system of the Bimmer, the M car has serious chances of grabbing the accolade.

Such a feat would require the Bimmer to one-up the 510 hp Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which, when fitted with the eight-speed automatic, can lap the Nordschleife in 7:32.

However, the M5 is not alone in its quest for four-door Ring glory. Just yesterday we talked about Jaguar's XE SV Project 8 appearing to do the same thing. As a delicious coincidence, the said Leaping Cat also mixes 600 horses with all-paw traction, so it looks like the game is on.

When it comes to the soundtrack part of the sedan battle, the Jag is the clear winner, though, since we're talking about a blown machine.
