Before the WRX switches to a new platform based on the one that debuted in the 2017 Subaru Impreza, the Japanese manufacturer created a special edition model dubbed WRX S4 tS. Only available in Japan, the limited-run model is adorned with WRX STI S207 bits, as well as a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine.
Let’s start with what lurks under the hood. Displacing two liters, the force-fed flat-four in the WRX S4 tS churns out 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s the same output you get from the regular WRX S4. Side by side to the standard WRX, the CVT-only WRX S4 tS prides itself on 28 horsepower and 37 lb-ft more. Against the WRX STI and its 2.5-liter turbo boxer powerhouse, the WRX S4 tS is 5 HP down, but a little bit torquier.

On the handling front, Subaru took the rack from the WRX STI S207, then added Bilstein DampMatic II adjustable suspension at the front. On all four corners, the rubber is wrapped around strong yet lightweight 19-inch BBS forged aluminum wheels. The optional NBR Challenger Package enhances the Japan-only model with a carbon fiber rear wing, among other goodies.

Priced from 4,600,000 yen (almost $45,000) and on sale until March 12, 2017, the Subaru WRX S4 tS further boasts a flexible tower bar and front-rear Active Torque Vectoring. Four-pot opposed-piston front brakes from Brembo are on the menu as well. From a design standpoint, the cherry red pinstripe on the front grille along with the STI badges will have to suffice.

Inside, the highlight is the luminescent speedometer. Recaro bucket seats branded with Subaru Tecnica International branding are also included. A suede-lined steering wheel is available as well, but only if the customer opts for the optional package mentioned two paragraphs ago. Developed as a commemoration of Subaru’s victories in the Nurburgring 24 Hours’ SP3T class in 2015 and 2016, the NBR Challenge Package also adds different wheels.
