For the 2017 Kia Sportage, the Korean manufacturer decided that sophisticated looks, refinements to the cabin materials, and modern mechanicals are what those in the market for a compact CUV need. To be utterly frank, Kia hit the nail on the head with the all-new Sportage.
Juxtaposing smooth curves with sharp creases, the 2017 Kia Sportage is one handsome compact crossover. As it's often the case with modern Kia models, the tiger-nose front grille is the focal point of the exterior design. In a close second come the dramatically sweeping high-intensity discharge headlights and the trademark ice cube-shaped fog lamps.

Thanks to a 105.1-inch wheelbase, the all-new Kia Sportage is more accommodating than its predecessor. Despite the increased dimensions, designers managed to give it an alluring stance thanks to short overhangs, a sloping roofline, and a sharply raked rear window.

Inside we're welcomed by a driver-oriented cabin. Though there are too many buttons on the center console for our liking, the Sportage is garnished with soft-touch materials and technology. In entry-level LX trim, the 2017 Kia Sportage boasts a 5-inch touchscreen media system. Go for the mid-range EX and you get a 7-inch unit. As for the range-topping Sportage SX Turbo, you're offered an 8-inch system with satellite navigation.

The 2017 Kia Sportage is available with front- or all-wheel drive. In LX and EX formats, the South Korean compact crossover is animated by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine that churns out 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft (237 Nm). For those customers who need a little more get-up-and-go, the range-topping SX Turbo comes with a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque. Both engine options are paired to a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission.

“Simply put, the Sportage is a breed apart in the compact CUV segment,” declared Orth Hedrick, the automaker's vice president of product planning. “Instead of bland utility, the Sportage combines distinctly European and sporty styling with thoughtful design and functionality, including innovative packaging, premium materials, a turbocharged engine and surprising features,” he added. He's right, you know.
