It seems that the confidence Hyundai showed when unveiling the all-new Tucson was not unfounded, as sales of new SUV jumped in October. The Korean brand delivered 60,005 cars last month, representing a substantial 20% increase over the same month last year.
Tucson sales are partly responsible for this increase, growing from 3,592 units last year to 7,298 this year. Considering the old model was considered a failure by the IIHS, we're not surprised demand more than doubled.

Several reasons contributed to the new Tucson's popularity. First, the engine range is a little more diverse, as it includes a 1.6-liter turbo that you can have with a twin-clutch gearbox. Second, it looks better than most of the other small crossover utility vehicles on the market.

The Santa Fe was sold more than 11,000 times as well, currently being the third best selling model in the Hyundai lineup. Sales of the Sonata were stable, and the Elantra gained about 3,000 customers in a month, somewhat surprising considering the age of the model.

The Kia brand saw its sales grow from 44,940 units in October 2014 to 50,044 last month, up 12 percent. The Rio was down by about one thousand cars; the Forte was flat and so were the Sportage, Sorento and Sedona. The only strong sign of growth came from the Optima sedan, which remains Hyundai's strongest model. However, it's flat for the entire year. The Tucson's sister car, the Sportage, will take a few more months to arrive stateside, but should prove just as popular.

For the January-October period of this year, the combined sales of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors in the US totaled 1,164,219 units, up 6.1 percent from last year. Hyundai says its per-unit incentive averaged at just $2,408, proving that its vehicles have become desirable. Hopefully, it can do something to spruce up the compact segment. Otherwise, Honda is going to run away with it.
