If the Dawn sounds familiar to Rolls-Royce enthusiasts, that’s because the British manufacturer used the same nameplate when Kodachrome color photo film was still regarded as some kind of rocket science. For the 2016 Rolls-Royce Dawn, the recipe is simple: get the Wraith and a chainsaw, hack the roof, then give it a cloth roof.
The carparazzi spotted the upcoming Rolls-Royce model gingerly showcasing its swirly camouflage in Deutschland for a rather simple reason: BMW owns Rolls-Royce and the Dawn will employ a number of 7 Series (F01/F02) bits and bobs. Just like the four-door Ghost and coupe-ified Wraith, the Dawn won’t borrow any switchgear from BMW but use the British manufacturer’s own ultra-luxurious trim.
Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, the CEO of Rolls-Royce, is very enthusiastic about the all-new model: “Our Rolls-Royce Dawn promises a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date."
"Dawn is a beautiful new open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds – an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine. It will be the most social of super-luxury motor cars for those beautiful people who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s social hotspots.” he added.
Some pretentious words here and there, but hey, Rolls-Royce is a byword for extravagance and the high life. To debut in the first quarter of 2016, the Dawn’s cloth roof is mirroring the design of the Phantom Drophead Coupé’s own folding canvas roof. In terms of exterior dimensions, it’s highly probable that the Wraith and Dawn to share the length, width and wheelbase, as it is the case with the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé and the Drophead Coupé.
That translates to a convertible that’s 207.4 inches (5,268 mm) long and 76.7 inches (1,948 mm) wide, measuring a whopping 122.5 inches (3,112 mm) in wheelbase. Curb weight will easily go over the 2,400-kilogram (5,291 lbs) mark, the reason why a turbocharged V12 engine will act as the belly of this opulent beast. The 6.6-liter motor will develop around 632 PS (624 HP) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.
