Following up the technological tour de force of the 2015 Renault Espace people carrier, the French manufacturer will continue reinventing itself with the 2016 Renault Laguna. After a plethora of spy photos of the Laguna IV sedan from our carparazzi, a French publication spotted a pre-production example of the 2016 Renault Laguna Estate on the A86 autoroute.
Ugo Missana of BlogAutomobile managed to snap nine photographs of the thing. Unfortunately, none of them showcase the front fascia of the 2016 Renault Laguna Estate. Doesn't matter though as our spy photos are enough to understand what's going on at the front.
More than that, the cabin design of the fourth-generation Laguna has also been undressed of its secrets. Underpinned by the Renault-Nissan CMF-CD platform, the 2016 Renault Laguna will share many of its oily bits with the 2015 Renault Espace.
The front-wheel drive sedan and wagon variants of the 2016 Renault Laguna IV will employ 1.6-liter TCe petrol-fed engines with 160 to 200 horsepower, with the latter lifted straight from the Clio RS' engine bay. On the turbo diesel front, single and twin-turbo iterations of the 1.6 dCi will offer from 130 to 160 horsepower. Cog swapping will be handled by a six-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Blending the cabin design of the Espace V with LED-accented headlights inspired by the Renault R.S. 01 racecar, the 2016 Renault Laguna is, first and foremost, a statement. The French manufacturer is well aware that German competition has the upper hand in terms of appeal, the reason the fourth-generation Laguna will be a showstopper in either four-door sedan or five-door estate formats.
Just like the latest Espace (and Volvo XC90 and Tesla Model S, for that matter), the R-Link touchscreen infotainment system dominates the dashboard in portrait mode. According to reports, the 2016 Renault Laguna will first launch in sedan format in October, with deliveries to commence early next year.
