You would think that a commercial for a given product gives the company that manufactures the respective item the right to say and do whatever it pleases. Usually, that's true, but Nissan is trying to sell ice to the Eskimos on this occasion.
Let's say we select four sedans with sporty characters and for the competition's sake, we want to decide which one is the best. The entries list goes like this: Acura TLX V6, Audi A4 2.0T quattro, BMW 3 Series 328i and Nissan Maxima SR.

Testing was carried out under the "2016 Nissan Maxima Test Track Challenge" name and was staged at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. There, the new Nissan Maxima met its rivals on the race track, with impressive results. So says Nissan.

"We expected the all-new 2016 Maxima, with its re-engineered engine, transmission and chassis to do well, but frankly even we were surprised by the head-to-head test results against some very well-established luxury sports sedans," said Pierre Loing, Vice President, Product Planning, Nissan North America.

Last time we checked, the 2016 Nissan Maxima had a V6 under the hood, just like the Acura TLX, while the remaining two competitors use four-cylinder mills to get their wheels spinning. You don't call that a square fight, do you?

Nevertheless, Nissan contracted AMCI Testing as an objective, independent third-party testing organization to explore and certify differences between the cars. As a result, here is the final timing after all laps were completed on the 1.8-mile (2.9 km) test track:

Vehicle                         Seconds        Margin (sec.)
Maxima SR                    1:18.50
BMW 328i                      1:19.48               0.98
Acura TLX 3.5L              1:20.58               2.08
Audi A4 2.0T Quattro     1:21.21               2.71

There's also a video below testifying for the Maxima's performance, but we're still not buying it.
