Jaguar definitely surprised us yesterday when they decided to launch their first ever SUV with a world record attempt. The fact that the F-Pace was successful in breaking the Guinness World Record for highest ‘loop-the-loop’ speaks about the determination the engineers had while developing it and yet, there’s more to a car than riding upside down.
As we told you yesterday, the new Jag will be coming after the BMW X3 (Facelift), the Audi Q5, the Porsche Macan and the GLC from Mercedes-Benz. Will it be able to match up against them?

Well, on the performance front it sure looks that way, the limited but well decked out range of engines the Brits are offering covering every taste, from efficiency to high-performance.

The entry-level choice will be the 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel Ingenium plant with 180 HP and a manual gearbox hooked up to a rear-wheel drive setup. If you don’t want to change the gears yourself, you can go for an 8-speed automatic but in that case you’ll also need all-wheel drive which will raise the price of the F-Pace by a noticeable amount.

Then there’s the 3-liter V6 diesel plant, good for 300 HP and no less than 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. That’s an enormous amount of twist and to put it differently, the same as a Competition Package BMW M6 that uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Yes, that’s the insane amount of torque you get from a simple 3-liter diesel these days.

The top of the range will be the 3-liter V6 supercharged plant shared with the V6 S model, making 380 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. If it also sounds the way the F-Type does, we’ll be buying one or two of these.

However, the practicality of the thing also needs to be taken into consideration and the Jag is definitely not afraid of its rivals in this regard. At 4,731 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2,874 mm, the F-Pace is just slightly longer and wider than the BMW X3, for example, and has a longer wheelbase. In terms of height, the two are basically identical.

Then there’s the boot space that, with the seats up, measures 650 liters and goes up to 1,740 liters with the seats folded. By comparison, the BMW X3 has only 549 liters of luggage space in the back with the seats up.

Judging by what we’ve seen on the floor at Frankfurt, we think that all of the F-Pace’s rivals have a thing or two to worry and we’re glad that all that marketing we’ve seen so far wasn’t in vain.
