After the Citroen DS5 was shown for the first time in February, ahead of Geneva, the French company decided to take the new car around the world and show it to us in Shanghai too. Since we were on the spot, we decided to take a few live photos of it, to allow you to get a better sense of how it really is.
Citroen wants to give the DS branch an identity of its own. In this regard, they are launching more and more models under this new marketing name, the latest being the DS5.
As is the case with all the other models in the range, this one too is set apart from its rivals mostly due to its styling. On top of that, the dynamic performance, refinement and attention to detail are paramount. And it shows.
Looking at it from close range reveals a dire attention given to the materials used as well as possibly the best fit and finish in the class. The materials used are better than expected and feel good to the touch, all around.
Of course, it might take you a while to get accustomed to the funky and non-conventional bits and pieces on the car but who wants to be ordinary anyway? We’re referring to the dash and the nav screen and everything around it that isn’t conventional and doesn’t fall into the same pattern as always.
While the Germans are struggling to make everything symmetrical, the French went the other way around. That’s why everything looks out of place inside. Even the analogue clock has been positioned in an off-set location, right above the start/stop button.
Other features of the car embody the DNA of the brand and keep in touch with its legacy. The front grille is similar to the other models in the range, and the overall styling of the car on the outside means you can’t miss it for a DS. The wheels and even the headlights have a certain je ne sais quoi that immediately make you think in French.
Under the bonnet, the best the PSA has to offer is being used. Engines have outputs ranging from 120 to 210 HP. All of them are diesel plants excluding the hybrid that on top of using a BlueHDi plant also adds an electric one to the mix.
There’s the Blue HDi 120 S&S model with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox on hand that has 120 HP and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, working as an entry-level unit.
Then there are the BlueHDI 150 and 180 models that you can guess what are capable of. Last but not least, the hybrid 4x4 diesel has 200 HP on tap and can work in pure electric mode alone.
Right now, not even the French can order a DS5 but the 2016 model should go on sale towards the end of the year.
