A few months ago we reported about GM saying that offering a hybrid version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray is a “very attractive idea”. We bet a lot of musclecar/sportscar enthusiasts weren’t very happy about that. Well, you’d better brace yourselves folks, because Ford might be going green with the 2015 Mustang.
Speaking to Go Auto at the sixth-generation Mustang’s unveiling in Australia, Ford global powertrain chief Bob Fascetti revealed that the Detroit-based manufacturer is looking into new powertrain alternatives for the new pony car, including diesel, hybrid and electric ones.
“We’re not looking at diesel at the moment, but given where we need to go with fuel consumption we are looking at all our options. And diesel is one of those options, along with hybrids and electric,” said Fascetti, without going into specifics or market timing for such versions of the Mustang.
There’s no need to panic of course, as Ford won’t be rolling diesel or electric Mustangs anytime soon, but it’s a scenario worth following the next couple of years.
