Known in Europe and Latin American as the ASX (from active sports crossover), as the RVR in Canada and as the Outlander Sport in the United States of America, the third generation of Mitsubishi's compact crossover just got a new four-banger powerhouse.
The more affordable sibling of the Outlander mid-size crossover SUV is one of the best-selling Mitsubishi models in the U. S. of A., the reason why the 5-year-old compact crossover has recently received an all-new motor with more power than the 2-liter unit.
Displacing 2.4 liters and available on the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4 ES and 2.4 GT (pictured) models, the 2.4-liter MIVEC four-cylinder gasoline engine produces 168 horsepower, which equates to 20 ponies over the 2.0 we already know.
Mitsubishi Motors North America "forgot" to tell how much pounds-feet of torque the 2.4 lump produces, which is a bit of a shame. Considering that the 2.0 MIVEC is rated 145 lb-ft (196 Nm) at 6,500 rpm, we guess that the 2.4L develops at least 160 lb-ft (217 Nm) in the worst case scenario. Overall, not bad at all.
Priced at $21,295, the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4 ES boasts with the aforementioned motor and a black-painted center bumper to differentiate itself from the ES trim level. In the case of the $23,595 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4 GT, you get many more kit for the money, including leather on the parking brake handle, aluminum pedals, LED turn indicators incorporated in the side mirrors, a Rockford Fosgate 9-speaker premium audio system with a 10-inch subwoofer and many more completely standard extras.
