2015 Ford S-Max Tested: More Family, Just as Fun

After almost 130 years of progress, the automotive world is still populated by stereotypes. The 2015 Ford S-Max, however, isn’t one of them. Unlike most MPVs out there, this one doesn’t make you feel you’re a decade older once you hop aboard. In fact, it’s quite fun.
The Blue Oval has bet on the evolutionary card for the second-generation S-Max, since the colorful stuff was already there, having been introduced in 2006 by the first S-Max. The S-Max was conceived as a niche people mover that would be slotted in between the full-size MPVs, such as the new 2015 Ford Galaxy and the compact ones, like the Ford C-Max. Considering this, the size of the car hasn’t changed.

As for the styling, the car may look nice in the photos, but it’s even better in bare metal. The only element that felt artificial was the set of air vents mounted on the front wings, simply because these are fake.

The S-Max doesn’t just borrow the Mondeo’s platform, it also gets the dashboard. This brings a serious upgrade up front, but the Sync2 infotainment system still falls behind our expectations.

In the back, the 3+2 seating arrangement remains. Unfortunately, the pair of seats in the third row remains dedicated to children, with adults only being able to use this on short distances. All five rear seats can now be folded flat using a control panel in the boot.

The atmosphere inside is family friendly, from the storage compartments to the overall look of the cabin and the welcoming seats.

The 2015 S-Max offers the same ride and handling mix we’re used to, but things have now been refined. While you’re having a bit of fun behind the wheel, your family can enjoy the necessary comfort without even noticing what you’re up to.

The steering is the most obvious change in the tech department, with Ford engineers developing something called Adaptive Steering. The trick lies hidden inside the steering wheel itself, but we’ll talk more about this in our 2015 Ford S-Max review.
