After an awful long series of concept cars, spied pre-production mules and a packed rumor mill, the Blue Oval finally revealed the all-new Ford Edge. Compared to the first-generation launched in 2006, this one has been changed for the better from head to toe, without making any compromises.
Starting with the skeleton of the machine, the 2015 Ford Edge sits on a slightly modified version of the global platform that debuted on the Ford Fusion sedan in 2012. Considering that the former generation utilized Ford’s CD3 platform, the modern underpinnings are certain to offer the all-new crossover with improved dynamics.

Marketed as the “first Ford vehicle with standard EcoBoost engine,” the entry-level 2015 Ford Edge is offered with a twin-scroll turbo 2.0-liter four-pot, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and a normally aspirated 3.5-liter six-cylinder. Each powerplant variant is coupled to a six-speed SelectShift flappy-paddle automatic and even the peppy 2.0-liter mill comes as standard with two exhaust tips for added sportiness. The 2.0-liter engine offers “an estimated” 245 horsepower, 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque and can tow up to 3,500 pounds when all-wheel drive and an optional towing package are added to the mix.

Auto Start-Stop fuel-saving technology is also available with the twin-scroll entry-level EcoBoost powerplant. As for the other end of the oomph spectrum, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost uses a compacted graphite iron block just like the 6.7L Power Stroke workhorse. Technical mumbo-jumbo aside, the Blue Oval declared that this engine is “expected to deliver more than 300 horsepower” and it will “ensure [the] Edge Sport is the highest-performance Edge ever.” Compared to the base model, the Sport is fitted with 15 percent stiffer antiroll bars, 10 percent thicker springs, improved damping and control, ultimately translating to “15 percent to 20 percent better road-holding capability.” No offence, but it’s kind of wrong to declare that the sporty version of a crossover is I-don’t-care-how-much percent more fun to drive than the base model, but hey, that’s how marketing people are like nowdays.

A little while back, Ford announced it intends to adorn all its future models with adaptive steering technology. Well, the 2015 Edge is the first Ford vehicle to be equipped with this fancy new steering tech, which will make the vehicle easier to maneuver in tight spaces and city traffic, while also offering a more engaged driving experience when you feel the need for speed. Mind you, only the Edge Sport and Titanium series will get it as a standard feature. Other highlight gadgets worth mentioning are the Active Grille Shutters, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, Blind Spot Information System, side parking sensors, as well as a handsfree liftgate and SYNC with MyFord Touch.

The 2015 Ford Edge is slated to arrive to North American showrooms in the first quarter of next year and will be sold through official channels in more than 100 markets worldwide. Unfortunately, the Blue Oval hasn’t offered any pricing information just yet, but we expect the all-new model to carry over the outgoing model’s sticker price of a little bit over $28,000 for the SE, while the Edge Sport will command upwards of $37,500.
