If you're in the market for a full-size SUV but you don't want to go all out with the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator, Chevrolet has the right stuff for you even if you need a little bit of off-road credentials. These models are the Z71 Tahoe and Suburban, both unveiled at the Texas State Fair.
Before going into specifics, let's start with what virtually everybody wants to find out first – the sticker price. The golden bowtie auto manufacturer declined to release pricing for these models, but the the Z71 package won't add a lot over the base price of the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4WD ($54,490) and 2015 model year Chevy Suburban LT 4WD ($56,695).
Furthermore, Chevrolet is being vague on technical specifications, but earlier reports hint that both Z71-spec full-size Chevys will get a 5.3-liter V8 churning out 355 ponies and 383 lb-ft of torque via a six-speed auto. In terms of gas mileage, that translates to a very poor 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
Despite all of this gratuitous ambiguity from Chevrolet, the Z71 pack has been properly detailed by the American manufacturer and we're happy to report it's coming with a lot of goodies. Starting with a few Z71-specific add-ons on the inside, a thicker skid plate that protects the oil pan is also offered, as well as new fog lights, a unique front grille design, tow hooks at the front and a slightly revised front lower bumper.
In addition to the aforementioned, the Z71 package adds to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban things such as running boards, a hands-free liftgate feature, wireless phone charging like on the Cadillac ATS, 18-inch alloy wheels wearing off-road tires from Goodyear, Rancho heavy-duty shock absorbers from the Silverado Z71 pickup truck, as well as Hill Descent Control for better control when the situation calls for it.
