Looking at the 2015 BMW R1200RS in person at the EICMA show today, it's hard not to be impressed. The model heavy inspiration from the S1000 R, grabbing the futuristic asymmetrical headlight design and doing what it pleases with it. Made with the rider in mind, the sport touring also features a windshield that can be adjusted on the go with only one hand, something we think will be very useful. Top box and side cases? Very good, as is the riding position.
The world rejoiced when BMW introduced the 2015 R1200RS at Intermot. True sport-touring nerve was finally back in the Bavarians’ roster and with the new boxer engine, this model enters a new era. Just like its R1200R naked sister, the 2015 R1200RSis powered up by the new liquid-cooled R engine.

This means 125 horsepower and a peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb-ft), a manual 6-speed gearbox and obviously, the shaft final drive. On the transmission side there’s nothing different from the rest of the new R bikes. The package has already been tested successfully in the R1200GS and RT machines and it looks like BMW has another winning engine.

On the aesthetic side, the RS is however, different from all its boxer siblings. Being a bike for riders who like a sportier vive, the 2015 BMW R1200RS incorporates some of the design cues of the acclaimed S1000RR. The asymmetric dual headlight array is telling the whole story at first sight. This R machine received a front cowl and a half-fairing for better weather protection and improved aerodynamics.

A story of either love or hate

The shape of the headlights has been revised, and is rather a matter of love or hate. Those who enjoyed the radical, zero-compromise looks of the initial S1000RR design would definitely say that this trademark feature of the bike is now dull. On the other hand, people to whom symmetry and traditional bike design appeal more will welcome the new looks.

Even though the lenses are identical, the actual light modules are different. We love symmetrical headlights so we’re in for the new design, anyway.

The electronic trim is similar to that of the naked R1200R machine. ABS and Automatic Stability Control are on the house, with the Rain and Road riding modes. Optionally, riders can choose a Pro mode which brings in two extra Dynamic and User modes, Dynamic Traction Control and banking detection.

Factory options also include Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment, Keyless Ride, and Gear Shift Assist Pro. The analog speedo is neatly complemented by a generous TFT screen and multiple warning lights. All looks and feels very well put together and the bike emanates a reassuring feel. Despite its compact looks, the 2015 R1200RS has plenty of room even for large riders and the passenger seat looks decent even for longer hauls. And with BMW’s optional panniers, you can almost hear the horizon beckoning.
