Ducati Multistrada to Get Variable Valve Timing?

Ducati is said to upgrade their Multistrada with variable valve timing and the introduction of the new engine is announced for October 14, ahead of the debut of the 2014 AIMExpo. However, it looks like Borgo Panigale will present the new power unit online, as the teaser photo mentions… and this means that Ducati will wait for their home show, the EICMA in Milan to reveal the bike itself.

The teaser photo, which doesn’t actually convey any info only mentions that “DVT is coming”. There are already three suppositions as to what the D might stand for, with people believing that it is short for Ducati, Dynamic or Desmodromic. Truth be told, I’d rather go for Ducati, especially as the maker already has some technologies whose name include the brand, such as Ducati Data Analyzer, Ducati Traction Control and more.

Upgrades expected to add more edge in the battle with BMW S1000XR

While no official mention of the Multistrada was made, it looks like the new technology will indeed be implemented in this bike, about which earlier rumors said it is expected that the 2015 model would benefit from various upgrades. BMW has already announced their S1000XR, a machine built on the modified S1000R platform and which is obviously going to eat into the Multistrada demographic.

Some speculated that the Multistrada will be equipped with the Superquadro engine which now powers the 1199 Panigale, but this is only a rumor. For now, we in fact expect that the 2015 sport-tourer will be delivered with the upgraded version of the Testastretta 11° L-twin, with some extra power available thanks to the variable timing architecture.

At the same time, the new Multistrada is expected to offer better fuel economy, and retain the riding modes and all the other neat high-tech features, such as electronic-adjustment suspensions, power modes, slipper clutch and more.

It will be interested to see how the new Ducati Multistrada and BMW S1000XR will fare against each other after they make their EICMA debut. We remind you that we’ll be present in Milan in early November and we’ll be bringing you live updates from EICMA.
