Although the brand new 2015 Acura TLX luxury sedan won’t make its official debut until next month, at the New York Auto Show, its motorsport counterpart, the TLX GT, is already completed and ready to take the track.
Developed by Honda Performance Development, the vehicle is scheduled to make its race debut on May 30, during the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, as a single-car entry for RealTime Racing (RTR).
The TLX GT will compete in the Pirelli World Challenge against cars such as the Audi R8 LMS, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and the Ferrari 458. The vehicle will be driven by team owner and driver Peter Cunningham.
Underpinned by an HPD chassis, the TLX GT is motivated by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine developed from the naturally-aspirated unit prepared for the road-going sedan. The new SH-AWD system was also sourced for the track-prepped car.
"The competition in the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge is incredible, but Acura has never shied away from strong competition, in the marketplace or on the race track," said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development and vice president of product planning and logistics, American Honda.
"The 2015 Acura TLX is a true luxury sport sedan, so it is fitting that the car be raced against several of its natural competitors, and even some up-market brands, in the Pirelli World Challenge,” he added.
Created to replace both the TL and the TSX, the 2015 Acura TLX will break cover at the 2014 New York Auto Show next month. The sedan will be fitted with Acura’s next-generation Precision All-Wheel Steer technology and an array of safety and convenience features.
