With a name like "Spark" Chevrolet's smallest and cutest hatchback was pretty much destined to be available as an EV sooner or later.
As the electric motors have begun being produced, GM has released that all important sticker that will define the way the Spark EV is viewed. Two big numbers allow GM to claim its little plug-in is the most efficient retail electric vehicle in the US. One is 82, the number of miles that you can go before you need another charge (EPA estimate), and the other is 119, the MPGe (EPA-estimated combined city/highway fuel economy equivalent).
Chevrolet's Spark EV runs on current generated from a 21 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is covered by a eight years or 100,000 miles warranty. Using a DS Fast Charger from SAE, you can top it bring the battery to 80% in about 20 minutes and be on your way.
It's not even particularly slow. The electric motor produces more than 100 kW (130 hp) and gets the car to 60 mph in under 8 seconds. With numbers like that, who really needs petrol any more?
The EPA sticker for the Spark EV says average annual costs are just $500. By comparison, the average new vehicle gets 23 mpg and costs $11,500 to fuel over 5 years, which means you save $9,000 in fuel over five years.
“Being able to provide our customers with the best overall efficiency of any retail EV has always been a key target for the Spark EV engineering team,” said Pam Fletcher, GM executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles. “We’re poised to deliver to the market an EV that’s not just efficient, but also thrilling to drive thanks to the 400 lb-ft torque output of its electric motor.”
