The guys from Auto Express set out to find out if the revised BMW 5 Series can still maintain its crown in the executive saloon segment in front of the massively reworked E-Class from Mercedes-Benz.
In this test, they went for the most sold versions of each car in Europe, the 520d and E220 CDI respectively. The for the Swabian model the numbers on the back mean it has a 2.1-liter diesel unit with 170 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.
For the Bimmer, the 520d emblem at the back means the car has a 2-liter turbo diesel unit under the bonnet with 184 HP and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. The Mercedes was fitted with an automatic gearbox whilst the BMW came with an old school 6-speed manual.
Whilst the Mercedes is more comfortable and has more space in the boot, by 20 liters, the BMW shines from a driver's point of view combined with a cheaper price and overall better interior, thus keeping its crown.
