The smart fortwo has had a rather troublesome history since the car's original concept idea was originally drawn up back in the early 1990s.
According to Automotive analysts from BernsteinResearch, Mercedes-Benz invested approximately three and a half billion Euros in building the smart brand from scratch.
The tiny car's losses after not even a decade of production were in the billions as well, as the market on which it was originally launched on was a bit susceptive to such a small vehicle, while ill-fated projects like the smart roadster and the roadster-coupe or the Mitsubishi Colt-based smart forfour weren't high seller either.
After years of dangling between profit and losses, the smart brand finally stabilized and the fortwo is soon to receive its third generation, which will be made in cooperation with Renault.
Until that time arrives, the current smart fortwo still has some life left, and the recently-launched electric version is one of the tiny city car's bets with the future. Auto Guide managed to have a go in the US-version of the smart fortwo electric drive and you can check out their opinion about the little bugger here.
