Last year, diesel car sales in the US jumped significantly above the general market growth trend, as consumers are starting to notice the significant benefits the oil-burners offer when it comes to economy. And so automakers are starting to offer different powertrains to quench demand. The best place to do this in usually premium mid-size sedans and SUV, as these are pricy enough to hide the more expensive powertrains and hide the performance shortcomings.
Mercedes has plans to put the diesel C-Class on the mop, we know that, but now we’ve learned that the German automaker will also have a diesel CUv in the form of the GLK for the 2013 model year. We’re talking about the 220 CDI 4Matic, powered by a 2.2-liter unit with 170 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.

According to Automotive News, the common-rail engine already meets US emissions laws, and Mercedes expects it will improve sales of the GLK to “high 30′s” compared to last year’s 24,310 units, according to Mercedes’ U.S. chief Steve Cannon.
