Ford recently unveiled the brand new 2013 Escape SUV, a model that unlike its boxy predecessor is built with the global market in mind. That’s because European customers will instantly recognize it as being the replacement for the Kuga, styled to look more like a Focus.
The big news revealed today by Automotive News is that Ford will drop the hybrid powertrain from the lineup. The current Escape Hybrid isn’t exactly a top market performer, having only managed to sell 9,000 models through November, 13 percent less than a year ago.
But that’s not why they are dropping the gas-electric mix. Simply put, it just isn’t needed, since the more advanced EcoBoost engines introduced for the first time to the model provide comparable milage number to the hybrid. Derrick Kuzak, VP of global product development, also points at the fact that there better mpg figures won’t make it more competitive on the market.
