The reinvention of American manufacturer GM after the bankruptcy in 2009 continues, with the group struggling to give its brands and models a new identity. And what better venue to present the new identity of some of those models than the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).
At Cobo Center, among several models presented by GM at the show, you can also find the Sonic, the local version of the European Chevrolet Aveo. The model, which will enter production in the US later this year, is part of a broader plan GM has to enter new segments of the domestic market.
When it is launched, the Sonic will arrive powered by a choice of two engines, an Ecotec 1.4l turbo engine rated at 138 horsepower (the same engine used in the Cruze, but slightly reduced in size) and an Ecotec 1.8l good for 135 horsepower. The former will be available in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission, while the latter will get either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
The Sonic will arrive on the local market as both a sedan and a hatchback. Both will be equipped with MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, electronic power steering, OnStar with six months of Turn-by-Turn navigation, XM Satellite Radio, USB and Bluetooth functionality and MyChevrolet mobile application with OnStar MyLink vehicle connectivity.
“The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known for,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Its combination of great design, fun driving experience and the latest connectivity features create a serious competitor with a fun spirit.”
