2012 Audi A3 Confirmed, Turbocharged 1.2-Liter as Standard

The new Audi A3 is projected to go on sale in 2011 and will be offered with a wide array of engines, including a turbocharged 1.2-liter powerplant which is likely to join the range as standard. At least this is what an Audi insider has told autocar.co.uk, hinting that the four-door sedan is expected to record fairly high sales in the United States.

There are a lot of details unveiled by the aforementioned source and even if they are sourced from a company insider, they still can't be regarded as official.

However, it may seem like the upcoming A3 will have a length of 4550 mm, which means it will be similar in size with VW Jetta. The trunk capacity will go as high as 500 liters, up 130 liters compared with the current generation A3 Sportback, the aforementioned source wrote.

“We’ve taken a good look at what it will take to better establish the A3 in the US market in the future,” the source told Autocar. “The four-door layout is something North American car buyers continue to seek, especially from a premium brand such as Audi. Expect a more distinctive look, but one that has clear links to the existing A3."

As mentioned, there will be several engine choices available, with a 1.2-liter TFSI turbocharged unit likely to join the range as standard. This particular unit will develop around 105 bhp and will come with a 15 percent better fuel efficiency compared with a normally-aspirated petrol-powered 1.6-liter powerplant. Other available configurations are a 1.4-liter 140 bhp, 1.8-liter 170 bhp and 2.0-liter TFSI 210 bhp. There will be several diesel options available, including a 1.6-liter TDI 105 bhp featuring automatic stop-start systems to reduce fuel consumption to as low as 75 mpg and less than 100 g/km of CO2.

The sportier version S3 quattro will come with a 2.0-liter turbo developing 280 hp.
