2011 Race of Champions Goes to Frankfurt

The city of Frankfurt will host the 2011 Race of Champions in early December, as confirmed by a statement released by the event's organizers on Thursday.

Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena will host this year's event, keeping the RoC on German soil following the 2010 edition of the competition, held on Dusseldorf’s ESPRIT arena. And the first ones to register for the December action are reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and 7-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, who will attempt to bring Germany its 5th consecutive title in the RoC Cup of Nations.

After winning the world championship there were a lot of emotions and pictures in my head that I will never forget. One was racing at the Race Of Champions in front of my home crowd and to win the ROC Nations Cup with Michael for Team Germany,” admitted Vettel, who last year stopped in he semifinals of the main event.

Hopefully this year I will make it into the final and win it. That’s the big target for Frankfurt in December. We all have a lot of fun every time we go, but the moment we put our helmets on we take it very seriously and we go hard,” he added.

It’s important to us to be in our home country so we’re really looking forward to throwing some beautiful cars around the Frankfurt circuit in December. Last year it was a great atmosphere. You’re so close to the fans that you can hear them even though the engines are noisy. And I’m sure it will be even better in Frankfurt,” added Schumacher.

The venue on which the 2011 RoC will take place between December 3-4 is formerly known as Waldstadion and used to host football matches during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It has a full capacity of over 50,000 spectators and benefits from a fully-retractable roof. A two parallel lane tarmac track will be constructed for this particular event.

Germany is going through a motorsport golden age with the reigning Formula 1 world champion and the most successful racing driver of all time. So we are proud to be the promoter as Sebastian and Michael again take on all comers in front of the Frankfurt crowd in December,” said Patrik Meyer, Managing Director of TSP (The Sports Promoters), official promoters of the event in Germany.
