The new Mercedes S63 AMG is here, with the most important change being the introduction of a 5.5 liter V8 biturbo engine.

Sitting at the top of the V8 S-Klasse range, the car lets the driver (or chauffeur) enjoy up to 571 hp and a maximum torque of up to 900 Nm.

The new engine uses ultra-modern solutions such as direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and twin turbocharging, a full aluminum crankcase, variable valve timing and a start-stop function to offer a high level of efficiency. The engine develops 544 hp an 800 Nm of torque in its standard form, with the ticking of the AMG Performance Package option box bringing the output to 571 hp and 900 Nm (this brings a increase in the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar).

The powerplant is mated to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission and brings a 25 percent fuel consumption reduction compared to its naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V8 predecessor (despite offering a 19/46 hp and 170/270 Nm increase). The unit returns a fuel economy of 10.5 liters/100 km (22.4 US mpg), a 3.9 liters improvement. In addition to that, it offers a 30 percent reduction in terms of CO2 emissions to 244 grams per km. Both performance versions of the unit offers the same fuel consumption and CO2 emissions level.

The S63 AMG only needs 4.5 seconds to reach 62 mph and tops at 155 mph (250 km/h) - electronically limited. The AMG Performance pack cuts 0.1s of the 0 to 62 mph sprint time and brings the top speed to 186 mph (300 km/h).

The new S 63 can be distinguished by a set of subtle changes, like V8 Biturbo badging and new AMG triple-spoke lightweight alloy rims that come in a 19 inch size. The badging is also used for the interior, with a new theme for the instrument cluster. Mercedes has also used a new contrasting color stitching for the standard PASSION leather finish.

As expected, the premium saloon is also packed with technology, using systems such as Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Crosswind stabilization, Torque Vectoring Brake and Direct-Steer.

The 2011 Mercedes S63 AMG starts at EUR127,200 for the short wheelbase version and EUR128,800 for the long wheelbase model. The AMG Performance package comes with a EUR7,900 price premium (None of the prices include VAT).
